Luc Robitaille took time out to say thank you to his friend and former teammate Ian Laperriere during his Hall of Fame induction speech on November 9, 2009:
"I want to say a quick thank you to some of my roommates, my friends -- Rob Blake, Matty Norstrom, Tomas Sandstrom, Tony Granato, Sean O'Donnell, Ian Laperriere and all the teammates I've had -- for all the great memories and your friendship. See, those roommates had to check out for me, because they knew that was part of my ritual. I told them I couldn't check out or I would have a bad game, so they checked out for me all those years."

On a lighter note, I was reminded of the benefit of Ian Laperriere signing with the Philadelphia Flyers this past offseason: local media members get to interview him twice this season.
While with Western Conference teams like Los Angeles or Colorado, Laperriere would swing into Buffalo once every couple of years. He's always in good humor, eminently quotable, and self-deprecating – oftentimes within the same sentence.
Add to the mix a definitive French-Canadian accent, and you can see why there's usually a media scrum around him even when he isn't a factor in the game.
I recall Laperriere being most charming a couple of years ago, after the Kings were pasted 8-3 by the Sabres. In describing the carnage, he referred to a point in the Sabres' rally when "how you say, all heck broke loose." He then smiled at a reporter, nudged him gently with an elbow, and asked, "Not bad for a French guy, eh?"
Last Friday, after the Flyers defeated Buffalo 5-2, a reporter prefaced a question by stating, "As much of a cliché as it is..." Laperriere, without missing a beat, interrupted: "I'm good with clichés – shoot. I'll shoot it right back at you."
March 5 – the date of the Flyers' next game in Buffalo – can't come around fast enough.

Ian Laperriere had a small fan club in the stands, presumably from his days as a Los Angeles King. Laperriere, a Montreal native, spent parts of 9 seasons in LA. A few of his fans wore t-shirts that read "It's All About Lappy." He joked with me: "See, there are a few people out there that like me!"

Dropping the Gloves to Clean Up the Pond
(from NHL.com - 11/23/09)
Ian Laperriere is no stranger to dropping the gloves. He even did it when he was a pre-teen. Back then, though, it was for slightly different reasons.
It was during his childhood, playing on the outdoor rink near his home in Montreal, that Laperriere honed the skills that have served him well for 17 NHL seasons...

Return to Denver "Weird" to Laperriere
(from the Denver Post - 11/24/09)
Philadelphia is Ian Laperriere's fifth NHL team, so he has been through "first-game-back" nights before. In fact, I was at the November 2005 game in Los Angeles when the Kings played a video tribute to Laperriere on the scoreboard screens.
But several hours before he took to the ice with the Flyers against Colorado, Laperriere conceded he had an emotional night ahead of him...

Flyers 2 - Sabres 4
Ian Laperriere left the game late in the first period after taking a slap shot from Jason Pominville square to his upper lip. He returned to the ice in the third period, wearing a full facemask, despite losing 7 teeth and receiving between 50 and 100 stitches to repair the inside and outside of his lip, according to the team's oral surgeon, Guy Lanzi.
"All hockey players are warriors, and then there are some that are even a notch above the rest.
And Ian Laperriere has proven once again here today that he is just that."

Laperriere Proves Toughness After Facing Slapper
(from the Mercury - 11/28/09)
Here's everything you ever need to know about the character of Ian Laperriere.
He threw his face in front of a Jason Pominville slap shot Friday. The puck, travelling about 90 MPH, split Laperriere's lip in two.
He skated off the ice on his own, went to the training room, found out that he had lost several teeth and needed somewhere close to 100 stitches on both the inside and outside of his mouth to close the wound...
Laperriere: Flyers' Warrior Solid on Ice
(from the Courier-Post - 11/28/09)
No Flyers forward puts his body in front of vulcanized rubber more often than Ian Laperriere.
Twenty times this season, the Flyers' 35-year-old right wing has laid out to block shots, proving he is either too brave or too dumb to consider the consequences.
"The word 'warrior' gets tossed around a lot in sports," said Flyers longtime oral surgeon Guy Lanzi, "but Lappy is definitely one. He proved it today."
Pulling Teeth: Laperriere Plays Through Injury
(from CSNPhilly.com - 11/28/09)
Ian Laperriere has come home before looking bloodied and banged up.
But never looking as bad as he did Saturday afternoon, when he let his wife and two sons see him on his iPhone from Atlanta, where the Flyers are playing the Thrashers...
Flyers 0 - Thrashers 1
Just one day after taking a slap shot to the face, losing seven teeth and receiving 50-100 stitches, Ian Laperriere logged 13:20 of ice time and was credited with 3 takeaways as the Flyers were shut out by the Thrashers on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Laperriere Skates, 7 Teeth Lighter
(from the Philadelphia Inquirer - 11/29/09)
Ian Laperriere's stitched lip was so swollen yesterday he could barely talk, and when he did, it was difficult to understand him.
But that didn't stop the Flyers right winger from participating in the optional morning skate - or playing in last night's game in Atlanta...
